Community Food Drive
As Pesach approaches, a local food rescue organisation is encouraging the community to turn their kitchen clean-out into an opportunity to support families in need.
FoodFilled is coordinating a community food drive in the lead-up to Pesach. The initiative invites people to donate non-perishable food items they may be clearing from their homes as they prepare for the festival. FoodFilled’s intention is to redirect these items to people experiencing food insecurity, ensuring that good food does not go to waste. All food collected during the drive will be distributed to local food relief agencies supporting individuals and families who are struggling to access enough food.
FoodFilled works across Victoria to collect surplus food and deliver it to communities facing food insecurity. By partnering with supermarkets, wholesalers, and volunteers, the organisation redistributes thousands of kilograms of food each month that would otherwise go to landfill.
Organisers say the Pesach food drive is a meaningful way to transform the popular custom into community care.
Rob Miller the CEO of FoodFilled commented “The Pesach experience is, among many things, a lesson in empathy. The Seder is designed to activate our senses and create feelings of both slavery and freedom. We sing ‘Dayenu’ and are reminded to count our blessings and express gratitude for all we have to be thankful for. As we prepare to celebrate Freedom with our families this Pesach and adjust to 8 days without Chametz, let’s take the opportunity to support those for whom hunger is a recurring struggle.”
FoodFilled hopes the initiative will add a new layer of meaning to Pesach preparations and demonstrate the great impact that can be generated by our community through small acts of kindness.
Food donations can be dropped-off between 9am - 5pm on March 26, 27, 30, and 31 at FoodFilled’s hub: 146-150 Chapel, St Kilda. Access is via the alleyway at the back of the building off Bothwell Street. Staff will be present throughout the day to receive contributions.
